SUMMARY:Arrive at Graceland
DESCRIPTION:Fly into Memphis. Take 5 minute shuttle bus ride to The Guesthouse at Graceland. Or drive and park your rig in Graceland lot. Or find trucker. Check to see if car is in the truck. Check to see it has at least four good tires. If starts\, park in The Guesthouse parking lot. Register. Put on your name tag\, flip through the tour book\, take inventory of your swag\, See if any of your friends are here yet. Go out to car again. Pull out a lot of dirty rags\, tools and various liquids to impress the girls. \nNo group events today\, but there sure is lots of Elvis in our hotel\, If your parents made you live in the closet\, you may not know this\, but Graceland is Elvis Presley’s mansion. It is across the street from us. Do not take the $150 tour. We get it for free tomorrow. \nIn the hotel\, try the  casual restaurant\, the nice restaurant\, or the bar. Sound-cancelling headphones optional. Fire pits on terrace next to pool. Alternately\, take an Uber to Beale Street. Just don’t take the Party Bike Ride with co-eds if you plan to drive tomorrow. Or do. The Guesthouse has complimentary PB&J’s with chocolate milk at 9 pm “while they last”. You can sneak 2 halves if you forgot to make a reservation for dinner. Notice the stuff in your room that you did not see before\, like car picture in toilet area. Nite-nite.

SUMMARY:x Graceland to Clarksdale
DESCRIPTION:A Little Bit of This\, A Little Bit of That\nJoy Ride\nOur first day in the delta. A little bit of everything —  Old Highway 61\, a section of the Great River Road\, two lakes\, a historic small town\, and that’s about it. The route loops around Route 61\, also known as the Blues Highway. We’re saving that for tomorrow. \nOld Highway 61\nThis two-lane paved road is runs from Cincinnati to New Orleans. We are driving a short piece of it that is okay\, and convenient. it was only in the 1930s that a system of paved roads made it easy for average middle-class people to venture out in their new family cars to see the country. US 61 once ran 1\,714 miles from New Orleans  all the way to the Canada–US border. \nLevee Road\nWe had to get special dispensation from the Army Corps of Engineers to drive this. We will only be taking on xxx miles\, but it’s way worth it to be right above the Mississippi River. Please don’t abuse this privilege by\, I don’t know\, spitting or speeding or whatever. \nGreat River Road\nMoon Lake\n \nArkabutla Lake\nOh\, well. Arkabutla Lake was a beautiful\, remote recreation area. In 2023\, the dam sprung a leak and the water is now kept artificially low. Repairs are expected to take 7-9 years. \n \nHernando

SUMMARY:Home of the Blues
DESCRIPTION:First full day in the Delta. Lots of agriculture. Maybe cotton still in boll. Boring flatland with dirt and no crops fields if not. Note: roads in this area are often around fields and even if it says Ana’s Bottom on the map\, it is not a road. Pay attention to directions. \nDrive enough of the Blues Highway to say you did. Understand that the Blues Highway is called a highway for a reason. \nHelena – West Helena\, Arkansas. The bridge is one of the only two crossings of the Mississippi River to Arkansas.  See Biscuit Time at broadcast. Pick up Delta Dirt. Visit Delta Cultural Museum in depot. Put it in neutral in roll up Gravity Hill. \n \nDrive around Moon Lake. It is very pretty and should be seen at sundown\, but we are Ghosts and we do not drive at sundown. \nExamine the Devil’s Crossroads. If you do not know what this is\, look it up. \nShop in Clarksdale. Shop a lot. Enjoy the weirdness. Navigate your way around Shack Up Inn\, “The Peabody we ain’t”. Group supper and blues music at Hopson Commissary on site.

SUMMARY:Natchez
DESCRIPTION:It’s going to be a big 3 days\, headquartered in Natchez where we park right on the riverfront. \nDay 1\nMorning in Jackson. Visit Mississippi Civil Rights Museum which is very\, very well done. Try Eudora Welty’s house if you can deal with unbelievably bad city roads and no parking whatsoever. If you are not wearing pantyhose or have not had a hip replacement in the last week or son\, explore the Mississippi River Basin Model. Not what you think. You’ll see. You might want to visit the website first. \nMostly hop on and off the Trace going north. Group photo at Windsor Ruins. \n \nVisit Vicksburg National Military Park\, particularly the iron-clad steamboat U.S.S. Cairo. \n \nDriver through Port Gibson\, “the town too beautiful to burn down.” If you want\, have a bite to eat and the very few restaurants in town. \nFlower arranging for fancy dinner at plantation. Signature cocktail-making. Drink said cocktails on famous terrace. \nDay 2\nThe BIG event and our only stop in Louisiana: Angola Prison Rodeo. There is only one way in and one way out. Very very long time in vehicle entry line. Ditto exit. Professional animals\, professional purses. Amateur cowboys. It is hard to practice when you are serving life. Enormous “hobby craft” sales area. Surprisingly good. And inmate food trucks. Try the Coke funnel cakes. \n \nDay 3\nOff to Arkansas again over the second\, and last\, bridge between Mississippi and Arkansas that we have been looking at for three days. Frogmore Plantation & Gin\, both historical and modern. We promise we will find our way through the lint without Ghost inhalation. \n \nBack to Mississippi to visit Longwood plantation and if the fall Pilgrimage is on\, more. You have officially reached your plantation quota. If you are not exhausted\, take a quick drive through the Natchez Cemetery. It is cool.

SUMMARY:Laurel
DESCRIPTION:Sick of Natchez Grand? Finally leaving there. Mostly drive east to get to Laurel. You can’t get there from here. \nLaurel is the setting for HGTV’s Hometown\, although I think HGTV picked them up after they were doing it already. Adorable village with made-for-TV streets and shops. Also husband sitting service. \nUnfortunately\, the neato new hotel that we were the very first to book had an awful fire. Too bad\, because HGTV decided to make a show about it. Woulda been win-win. The proprietress is Mallory Raspberry. True that. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \nPerhaps a stop at Sanatorium. Just like it sounds. From 1918 to the 1950’s the Mississippi Tuberculosis Sanatorium treated people with\, well\, tuberculosis. There is a nifty little museum there. Good bathroom stop? \nShopping! The Laurel Mercantile (Erin’s)\, the Scotsman (her husband’s)\, the Scent Library (god knows who thought this one up). However\, the Scent Library has these scents: \nLaurel (of course)Saturday Morning at the GroveMama’s HouseTree LotPorch PartyLemon Ice Box PieYoung Love (gotta get that one)Pancake Day \nFor Alex: Leiper’s ForkFor MJ: Faulkner’s DeskFor Sarah: French Quarter \nOne of them has barley as a component. I guess. Then there are all these “Chapter” candles. Don’t ask me. \nThe Scotsman has a real woodshop with a “Recording” sign that lights up when they are\, uh\, recording. Also an amazing walk in cooler with a billion flavors of soda pop in glass bottles. Ask the counter guy where to uncap them. \n

SUMMARY:Crawford
DESCRIPTION: Survive hangover. \nVisit the Soule Steam Museum which is a really cool place with lots of steam engines. Well\, more than that. It’s an industrial plant that closed and basically everyone left it exactly as it was\, papers on the desks and all. It is also called the Industrial Heritage Museum at Soule Steam Feed Works. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \nSweet Home Alabama. Slog over to Gaineswood\, a National Historic Landmark which is said to be the finest example of Greek Revival in country. Up to Aliceville\, a WWII German POW Camp. It was a pretty nice place if you had to be a POW. It has a Coca Cola bottling plant in it. Go figure. It did not exist in the Camp. The museum folks are very proud that over 3\,000 visitors a year go there. It is said to be better than it sounds. \n \nBack to Mississippi. Drive around Noxubee’s Bluff Lake. Breathtaking. \n  \nDinner at the Tangerine Motel\, a really nifty place in the sorta country. The Tangerine used to be Black elementary and middle schools. Green fields overlooking the old stadium. Very nice patio with fire pits.

SUMMARY:x All Trace\, All Day
DESCRIPTION:Tupelo to Muscle Shoals\nToday we are driving about 150 miles straight up the Trace and halfway to Nashville. Our destination to the north is the Old Trace Drive. This dirt road is one of only two places on the original Old Natchez Road that can be driven today. It’s only 2 1/2 miles\, but a really great excuse to drive all day on one of the purtiest roads you’ll see to get there. It’s also fun. On the way to our way back to our hotel in Florence\, AL\, we’ll visit the Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall (dare your friends to pronounce that consistently).  \n \nParkway Visitor Center\nStart your day in the Visitor Center just up the road from the Hotel Tupelo. It’s the big one on the Trace\, and very interesting. Short film\, timelines\, gift shop\, etc. Also restrooms if you drank your coffee too late. Opens at 9. \nMilepost 270 – Old Trace Info Sign\nIt’s worth going the 50 steps to wonder where the trail is fricking going. Just look down at the ditch. That’s it. That’s the Old Trace when it was still a footpath. There are also some Confederate gravestones but I’m not sure I see the point in seeing them.  \nMilepost 327 – Colbert Ferry\nColbert Ferry. George Colbert\, a Choctaw\, operated a stand and ferry here. The Tennessee River was part of the water route on the Trail of Tears as a result of the Federal Indian Removal Policy. Between 1816 and 1840\, tribes between the ceded their lands in over 40 treaties. President Andrew Jackson set a policy to relocate eastern Indians\, endorsed by Congress in 1830. Over 100\,000 Native Americans were driven west\, sometimes by military force\, and often treated brutally.  \n \nMilepost 375-ish – Old Trace\nWe will experience the road as it was in the early 1800s. The Natchez Trace Parkway\, constructed in the 20th century as a National Park\, does not follow the exact historical route of the Old Trace. What was it really like\, you wonder?. Voila! \nRemember\, this route was for hundreds of years a footpath. With maybe a few horses. \nWarning: this is a narrow road\, and there may be a few low-hanging limbs. Hooray: no RVs.  \nThere are three scenic overlooks to enjoy\, especially if we are hitting the fall colors. At the end of this cutoff\, there are restrooms on the right. Hey\, it’s been a long drive\, am I not right? \nTake a left and go back south on the Parkway. \nMilepost 350 – Dealing with Mudholes\nExamples of cuts around mud. If you don’t want to stop (I wouldn’t)\, here’s what the sign says: \nThis early interstate road building venture produced a snake-infested\, mosquito-beset\, robber-haunted\, Indian-traveled forest path. Lamented by the pious\, cussed by the impious\, it tried everyone’s strength and patience. \nWhen the trail became so water-logged that wagons could not be pulled through\, travelers cut new paths through the nearby woods. \nHere you see three cuts made to avoid mud into which oxcarts and wagons sank\, making progress slow\, dangerous\, or even impossible. \nWe are Ghosts. It is not impossible. \nRenaissance Resort Muscle Shoals

SUMMARY:The Trace & Muscle Shoals
DESCRIPTION:All Trace\, all day\, going up from Tupelo to Florence. Put your Flying Lady over the border in Tennessee to drive the couple of miles of the Old Trace that are still drivable. \nA quick detour brings us to the Rattlesnake Saloon which is located under a big rock\, and the Coon Dog Cemetary. \nWe’ll stay two nights in Sheffield\, Florence\, Tuscumbia\, Muscle Shoals. They are basically the same place in north west Alabama. \nOn Halloween\, our supper will be at the Boiler Room. It’s in a basement and has sorta little bowling and other stuff to do in a pretty retro-trendy place. \nSaturday is Muscle Shoals Sound Studio where everyone who is anyone has recorded. SUMMARY:Hotty Toddy
DESCRIPTION:Today we go to The Apron Museum! And to make matters even more exciting\, an abandoned nuclear power plant project. Never completed\, so no worries.  \nFor all you Civil War buffs\, we are also headed to Corinth. If you do not know\, then you are not a Civil War buff. Just think 1862. And railroads.  If you are so inclined\, visit the Civil War Interpretive Center. Whiz by the Crossroads Museum that has trains\, firetrucks and whatever. You can also learn about Dilworth’s Tamales.  \nBet you have never had a slugburger. Well\, Corinth is the place for slugburgers\, but you can eat other things. It’s just that Corinth is at lunchtime. \nDrive through New Albany. It is has a cute downtown and Scarlet’s Donuts. But donut shops are usually closed after lunch. I suppose if you skipped the slugburgers and Civil War stuff\, you could get a donut. Or a dozen. Or two. \nTo Oxford\, home of the University of Mississippi\, or Ole Miss (if you were paying attention in Jackson\, we really ought not to be calling it Old Miss). Since it is a Monday\, and the football game was on Saturday\, we will be having our own tailgate cocktails. Oxford has tons of good restaurants. You need to find out what Hotty Toddy means.
