A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That
Joy Ride
Our first day in the delta. A little bit of everything — Old Highway 61, a section of the Great River Road, two lakes, a historic small town, and that’s about it. The route loops around Route 61, also known as the Blues Highway. We’re saving that for tomorrow.
Old Highway 61
This two-lane paved road is runs from Cincinnati to New Orleans. We are driving a short piece of it that is okay, and convenient. it was only in the 1930s that a system of paved roads made it easy for average middle-class people to venture out in their new family cars to see the country. US 61 once ran 1,714 miles from New Orleans all the way to the Canada–US border.
Levee Road
We had to get special dispensation from the Army Corps of Engineers to drive this. We will only be taking on xxx miles, but it’s way worth it to be right above the Mississippi River. Please don’t abuse this privilege by, I don’t know, spitting or speeding or whatever.
Great River Road

Arkabutla Lake
Oh, well. Arkabutla Lake was a beautiful, remote recreation area. In 2023, the dam sprung a leak and the water is now kept artificially low. Repairs are expected to take 7-9 years.
